I am told that the questions were generally easy, but that they hadn't expected such questions. One student reported that the longer questions were toward the back of the test. She had been told by a commercial review company to start at the back (where the longer questions are) and work her way forward (so she wouldn't be as fatigued mentally when she got to the longer questions).

I would like to know any possible suggestions on how to study for the Social Studies comprehensive test. I am certified in many other states, but this test seems to be in my way here. So far it has been impossible it seems. Most or i should say almost all of the test seems to be BS so far and irrelevant.

I would like to know if there are any suggestions or helpful hints on passig the Professional Development. I am certified in several states and this test is in my way to become certified in Texas. I am not a good test taker, but have never had this tough of a time passing. I have studied the Baron's Guide, Prep of ExCet Exam, and Art Williams's Review. I believe that the test is another way for the state to make money from struggling recent grads or others who come to Texas. we have all been through the necassary colllege reguirments a,d i don't see how the test proves that we are more qualified. I have recently passed the All Level Physical Education excet and have yet passed Professional Dev. Test. I have tried everything, Excet review, Art's tape and cards and Barron's book. Nothing seems to help. I have to pass it in January or I will loose my job. Please Help!!!

I just took the Physical Education test. It is not difficult. In fact, I felt that the qualifying test was more difficult. The best way to pass it is to remember ExCET ISD and go in there with a positive attitude. Read all the responses, that goes for all the test. Very little of it is concepts, most is common sense. Make sure you are understanding what you are reading. If you get tired, go to the bathroom and get a drink of water. Most of all, take your time. It took me about 2 hours to take the test. RELAX and think positive!

Several questions on the geography test were about Yugoslavia which is not longer a country. They want us to be good teachers etc. but some of their questions are outdated. If we taught that way we would be fired. Ihave letters of commendation from administrators and legislatures in other states and I have never seen anything so rediculous we have to take to become a teacher in TEXAS. The books and requirements that the state requires does not begin to cover what students I had in Montana had to learn. They are behind almost two years in academic preparation. Standarized test we are told do not measure the true knowledge of a student yet they give them to Teachers(excet) and students.

I just received my results from the Secondary Prof. Dev'l and it was a 64....Okay this was my 3rd time to take it...Get real!! I was in honor society in college, yet this unruly test does NOT evaluate the professional teaching knowledge I learned in college. I've been teaching 2 years and have had 2 outstanding evaluations....but now my job is on the line because of a biased test CREATED by professional test makers whom have NEVER been a teacher nor administor in the classroom setting....Go figure...Texas is short 40,000 teachers---Unfortunately, not being able to pass this BIASED test will only increase that # to 40,001...

i believe that the test is biased and a test does not make you a better teacher. i know a lot of teachers that their students are always the highest in the taas. now, does that make those teachers are bad, eventhough they have not passed the excet. i believe that the excet is a way so that the state can take away the money. i believe that a lot of people are super smart, but are not good test takers, and if the state believes in respect for each human being, then respect how each person thinks. let me give you an example of a biased question? my mother send me to the store to get bread. when i go to the store, there was no bread. What should you do next? A. go to another store to see whether they have bread. B. go back home and tell your mother that there is no bread. C. buy some bread rolls. Well, a lot of you would go with A, but here is the reasons why none of them is correct. for A, the town is so small that there is no other store where i live. for b, my mom has taught us that if there is nothing in that particular store on what she asked us, go back home and she will tell you what to do next. for c, in our house we never eat with bread, we always eat with tortilla. so that is how the test is so biased. now if a excet test asks us about archery, there are so many classes to take besides archery, that maybe you didn't have to take archery in college. that means we do not know archery.

This or any test is not a true measure of your ability to teach effectively. These so called teaching exams are nothing more than money schemes for someone to make a quick buck. I've taken the NTE and Praxis and they both were based structured ideal classroom setting that hardly exist these days. I've been teaching computers and math for seven years in New Orleans before moving to Houston to work for HISD. The answers to questions being asked are not the approaches that you would take in the REAL world. I've come to noticed that we are being asked to be more concerned with all the "PET" educational strategies like SFA which teaches reading in isolation and testing kids instead of actual teaching. As an African-American, we have a the original name for the the NTE aka Negro Teacher elimination EXam.

Anyone have any ideas on passing the English and History ExCets. I've passed my excet in journalism and my PD for secondary but my school wants me to try and pass the English which is outside of my major, I have a degree in journalism and history. I think that having to write a lesson plan really stinks when you do not know the particular piece of literature. Then the critque that they give you doesn't help a whole lot either. I taught senior English this year but there were only 3 questions that really dealt with British Literature or senior English. Has anyone taken some of the seminar that cost $85 and up for a session. I have taken the professional and English test . I have found these test basically are trick questions that test very intricate reading skills. If you need tips on the English sections they find obscure pieces of literature and ask your to critique them and build a lesson plan. If you develop the plan to incorparate the various learning styles and state that is what you are during, you should be fine. Use all of your time and review your answer. The tests are tedious so there is a tendency to become bored and careless.

The PD test is nothing more than a lot of reading, understanding what you read, and taking the knowledge you were taught in your education classes and using it. I had a very difficult time passing but I finally made it. It all of a sudden clicked. Do not think of a normal classroom setting or school setting in answering your questions. What ever it takes for a child to learn, as a teacher, you do it. (Community involvement, Peer tutoring)

Some of the questions are to broad and do not specify exactly what the question means. These type of questions will throw you off easily. I still have to pass the Comprehensive in Texas and this is my third time, I felt so sure of myself the third time because I had made a 69 on the 2nd try. But low and behold the people who make these tests change my format and questions completely, which did not help me and I made a 66. I am also so fustrated. As for advice or help, I am trying to memorize and remember all of the domains for the Comprehensive Excet, this time because I also am running out of time. I am trying to study a little basic of every subject for the Comprehensive. is another idea that has helped me understand what they want on those questions. If you look and study the domains, notice that t are some domains that say exactly what they want you to learn. For example, if the domain is "Measurement" learn what the domain says, then to the math section of maybe 4th or 5th grade basic math and know your measurement well and know most of what Measurement involves. That way if the question is on the test you will know it. I do hope that this information will help someone out t that needs some sugestions. In conclusion, Please do not give up, believe in yourselfs no matter how hard the state makes it to be a teacher or a already teaching teacher. I passed the TExES exam for science 4-8. The best advice i can give is try to get your hand on textbooks from your local school district in whatever content area you are studying. If science, to the middle schools and see if you can borrow textbooks from grades 6-8. You can also to half price book store and look for old textbooks t. Start reading and focus on areas w your weak. od luck.

One clue to passing the professional development test: The test gives you a situation and gives you several choices. The correct answer is usually the choice which causes you to work the most. What ever cost you the most time and energy is usually that right answer. Which ever answer seems like a short cut or time/energy saver is the wrong answer. During the test, one must imagine that in teaching, one has all the time and energy in the world.

To me, the Texes test was harder. I took the ExCet and passed for prof. dev. Had to take the Texes for subject area and it was very tricky! Much harder. The study manual did not prepare you for the real thing. Only one question was similar.

I want to pass along a website to anyone wanting a little more help to prepare for an ExCET/TExES exam. www.excetreviews.com From this site you can order a study manual and/or register for a four-hour review course in your subject test area. I have used this service only once, but am hoping to use it again as I prepare to add another content area to my teaching certificate. (Composite Science 8-12) When I registered, I paid $5.00 extra to have the study guide mailed to me a couple of weeks prior to the class. Upon receiving the study guide, I took the practice test and then studied in my weaker areas. I scheduled to take the review class about a week or 2 before the actual test. The review classes are held at various colleges around the state. I attended the review course and the instructor was exceptionally focused as he prepared us for the test. The class size of about 10 people kept the study session personal and informal. After the class I knew exactly what I still needed to study. I made a 90 on that test. I wish I would have used this service to prepare for my undergrad excet level testing. It indeed made a difference for me. I hope that some of you can use this information and find it helpful as well.

From what I have heard, to take the test and answer correctly, you pretty much have to put yourself in a "perfect world" and from t. I have taken the test several times as I have read that so many others have done. I do not wish to take the test any longer due to the fact that is not comprehensible. Also, I just recently learned that in the state of Louisiana parents can teach their youngsters at home without formal training of higher education, yet teachers can not be in the classroom unless they have higher learning education. I just received my score for the Journalism ExCet test, and of course I did not pass (or I would not be writing this). I t a 64 and thought the test was easy when I took it, and now that I reflect on it I can't think of any answer that was wrong. The funny thing is I also t my score report, which was available online (as soon as it was posted), the day that late registration started for the next test date. Coincidence? Of course not! On top of the standard fee they charge an extra $72 for late registration. They took almost a month to grade it, did they really need to release it on the next test date's late registration start date?

Hello, I, too, can empathize will with you all. I took the 8-12 PPR and did not pass. I made a 230 which isn't too far from passing; however I take it again this Saturday. I bought a study guide that really helped me. I am confident that I will pass this time around. The study guide is called "How to Prepare for the TExES". The publisher is Barrons. I bought mine at Hastings for 15.00 and it is well worth the price. For my English Exam, I bought a study guide from Texesreviews.com I haven't studied that one yet, but just looking through it, I saw some pertinent information that the real test would probably ask.

I just found I passed ec-4 . I took the CAT and answered 77 out of 100 correct. T are three different test out t and they all should be in the same range for passing. I am now a highly qualified special ed teacher. Woo hoo!!

I passed the SS composite and used the the cliffnotes for vernment and a couple of books for HS history. The hardest part was the Econ. Try getting review copies of history books from Prentice Hall. Try the public library too. I think you will be OK if you can get one for US and World His and basic Econ. Good luck!

It costs around $50, but is by far the best book I found. It isn't test prep! You have to read, reread, and understand what the authors are talking about. Then discuss these issues with a peer. Talk about your strategy.

I just found out that I passed the English Language Arts and Reading 8-12 exam. It was hard, but I passed. The first time I took it, I made a 217, but this time a made a 245. I studied for this exam for almost 3 months. I know it's possible to pass. I still have to take the PPR, but the confidence that I have now from passing my content has me ready for the PPR. So, I know that others are capable of doing the same thing I did. It takes a lot of studying and self discipline and I know everyone who has the desire to be a teacher has self discipline. I just received a scaled score of a 68 on the Journalism ExCET Exam. Frankly, I am stunned beyond belief, as I am a former journalist. I walked out of that testing room without the slightest doubt I had a near perfect score. I thought perhaps I may have missed a couple questions at the most. I easily passed certifications in other content areas. But journalism is the only profession I had for 5 years! Can anyone tell me what messed up kind of test this is and what kind of answers they're expecting? Has anyone who wrote this test actually worked in a newsroom?

How can I formally challenge the results on the Journalism ExCET Exam. The more I think about it and run those questions and answers through my head again, the more upset it makes me. I have taken many tests in my life. Whether my scores were od or , I've never questioned the validity of the results until now. This was one of the easiest tests I've taken in years, but the apparent answers they're looking for indicate a complete stretch from reality and what competent journalistic standards and ethics are in this profession. I cannot believe I passed the English 8-12 exam, but I did it. As for any suggestions, my advice would be to take your time and really think about the questions, kind of like the PPR. It seems so common sense. I only made a 2 on the essay, but I really spent time on the multiple choice. Maybe do the essay first and the longer questions first because I know I could hardly concentrate on the essay after 3 1/2 hours of questions. Also, I bought a study guide which barely helped. I looked at it maybe for half an hour. I would just look at the TExES website practice questions to see the kind of questions they ask and about the essay. Good Luck!

I took the July 9th Texes Social Studies Composite 8-12. I have been Teaching World History and World Geography for 4 years and I studied 4 hours a day for a month on U.S. History, Government, Economics and Sociology. The test was still amazingly difficult. I did pass the first time out with a 267. I believe that teacher resources are the trick to passing. I was originally certified in History 6- 12 with the Excet. That test was difficult also, but not as hard as the Texes Composite. Teacher resources helped on that one too.

I took the Math 135 test today. I am a retired engineer who decided to keep working as a teacher. I am using the alternative certification program. I have never in my life be given a test as tricky as this one. The completely violate the rules of assessment. I am surprised that anyone can pass the test with all of its tricky questions. T are more than one way to solve problems the answer should be the result not someone's idea of what the fourth step should be. They should check with the real world w these test writers would not last a week before someone realized how insane they are and fired them. No wonder Texas is begging for teachers! Someone needs to make a clean sweep from the top and find some real experts. In their own the test should assess knowledge not someone’s opinion or one person’s perception. I guess I will try again I really enjoy teaching and might add had some success.

Hey, I just took the computerized EC-4 PPR today and I thought I did pretty od but I only t 57 out of 80 questions right. T were 4 domains. Creating a positive classroom environment(approx 15% of test)I t10/12 right, Implementing Effective Instruction/assessment(approx 31%) I t 18/25 right, Fulfilling professional roles/responsibilities(approx 23%)I t 14/18 right and designing instruction and assessment(approx 31%)I t 15/25 right. I think I failed simply because of the last portion which probably has the most weight on the test. Can anyone share their scores so I can make any comparisons. Thanks

Hi Lena, I am taking the computerized test tomorrow in Arlington TX. You have to score a possible 240. 300 being perfect. You have to make 75% I think. But you will have to do the math. You will need to convert the 240 to standard scores. You need to add up your total out total.

If you had as many grammar and spelling errors as you've listed , it's no wonder you're not licensed yet. I really wish all of you od luck in taking your test. I have taken the Gen K-4 two times now and have not even tten close to passing. I just took it again yesterday don't know my score but I know I didn't do well. You really can not study for this test cause each time you take the test the harder it gets, as well as things that you will never use in a classroom. People are not getting into teaching for two reasons. 1) Low pay. 2) making the test to hard to pass. I really thought that the idea a teaching was for the children not for taking test that has nothing to do with the area you are ing to teach in. The test should be over helpin the children that low to pass ideas on helping children learn better ETC.... Guess I am just letting for a little steam... After reading the horror stories and comments on this site, I can certainly relate to them because I have ne through the same thing. I recently took the ss 8-12 composite and thought that it was the most irrevelant, innocous test that I have ever taken. I believe that this matter should be referred to whatever agancy monitors the SBEC or to somebody in vernment. These people are playing with teachers ability to make a living and ripping us off with the test and posting fees that they charge. Is anyone out t interested in seeing if we can bring it to a vernment official's attention or to see if t's grounds for legal action? The best of wisdom I can give is take as many practice tests as possible. If any of your subject matter is covered in an AP class, to Barnes and Nobel (or some other book store) and use those AP Test Study guides to practice test yourself. I took the SS 8-12 test for the first time last month and t a 278 by using this method. World History 18 of 21 correct (took 10 AP practice tests) US History 24 of 26 correct (took 12 AP practice tests) Government 15 of 16 correct (took 8 AP practice tests) Economics 15 of 16 correct (took 4 AP practice tests) Geography 13 of 21 correct (took 2 AP practice tests) SS Foundations 18 of 20 correct. You don't have to buy the book, just take a notepad with you and take the practice tests.

I just received my unofficial test score and I passed with a 249. Not by much but I passed! I am trying to refrain from leaping and flipping because the score is unofficial. I am in an alternative certification program. I did not study AT ALL and since I received my undergraduate degree in music-vocal performance and my masters in education- instructional technology, I just wanted to and take the English-Language Arts & Reading/Social Studies 113 (4-8) TEXeS exam just to know what I was facing. My theory was if I failed at least I would know what I was facing and how to prepare next time. However, my plan was to slow, recognize the best answer since t is more than one correct answer, try to block out the distractions caused by some of the other test takers, and trust my first response. I passed the English 8-12 last July and it took me a damn year to finally pass the PPR. It's obvious that they make the test difficult. You all just have to be tenacious and steadfast about the situation. I feel like I need a PhD behind my name now...lol Well, od luck to all of you and take care and keep trying; I did and it finally paid off...

I am taking the generalist EC-4, have passed the PPR and missed the ec-4 by 4 and 7 points so frustrating can anybody help with advise or even some possible answers that maybe im missing and not understanding. I'm on pins and needles. I have taken this STUPID/BIASED test 5 times and I'm sooooooooooooo frustrated. My job is on the line and I will be taking the computerized version of the Generalist EC-4 test soon. Does anyone remember any questions on this test? Please help!

the best thing I can tell you is to learn the key in the competencies and apply that to the answer choices. From what I saw, it works everytime. I did this and made a 270 the first time. I have helped others recognize the and they too have passed.(249, 256)Also apply each question and scenario as it were your child and how you want them to be treated.

I will be taking the Generalist 4-8 (#111) content exam on Oct. 21. I have been trying to use the study guide from the sbec website but getting all of the information is taking tttttooooooooooooooo long. I am in desperate need of some direction.
