Why don't the test scorers automatically give those students who make 69's on the exam one point. One point does not determine whether or not someone is a good teacher or not.

Do you believe this is a cultural biased test? I've taken it several times and failed. Do you understand what you are getting wrong?
John Doe - Friday, June 23, 2000 10:30:26 PM
Who believes this test is a money scheme? Are you fixing to be put out of a teaching job if you do not pass the Excet? If so what district are you in? I've discovered that it varies from district to district when it should all be the same since we are all in the state of Texas.

I have taken the test several times and I have failed it every time I have taken it. i do believe it is cultural bias. I have a teaching certification in Ohio, and the run away that Texas gives makes people want to move back to where that original came from. I am going to take it one more time, but i am not guarantee a job next year unless I pass this test. I love teaching but failing the test over and over makes me want to reconsider my career. are there any suggestions for passing the test? I really need them.

Don't worry, I took my content part of the test 4 times, and I passed the fourth time with a 70. They made alot of money off of me. The last time I took it, I went to the Excet Reviews. Look it up on the internet. They have classes...it cost about 100$ for the class or like 34$ for the booklet. They have specific classes on whatever you are taking. It really helped me. The other people who were there were in the same shoes I was in. I had to pass it. What was good was that we all remembered different questions, and talked about ones that gave us a hard time. Also, when I took the test I took the full time to take the test. By the fourth time though, I felt like I had taken the same exact test 4 times. Good Luck, don't give up!

I am already frustrated taking the Secondary professional development test, I have failed several times. I have attended seminars , reviews, but to no avail. I have passed my content area, which is Math a long time ago, but I could not pass the prof. dev. I have been taking it for 3 years, and now I am just a plain substitute teacher doing a full time job as a teacher but receiving a substitute pay, no school, no pay.I will try to take the test again this July 15. Can you give me some advice?

Can anyone tell me the website where you can find study infformation for the social studies composite? I have failed it once and probably this second time, but who knows. We are all in the same boat, and I don't know about you, but the sbec will not respond to me when I write them to justify this stupid test. It goes against everything that teacing is about. Not to trick the kids, but to teach them to learn. Not who everyone in history is or all of the other crap on that test.

Some of you may not be aware of a new study guide for the Professional Development exam...Pass the ExCET on Your First Try. My husband wrote the book and we've been selling it to universities, school districts and individuals for about a year. This fall it will be in all the major book stores in Texas. We have heard only positive comments about it and are so happy that it has helped people who have had trouble with the exam. We do one-on-one tutoring in the Dallas area. The book has all the study info in outline form, illustrations, study aids, worksheets, and now will include a CD with an interactive module (to replace the disk we previously included). Many have told us this is the best thing out there and we recently received praise from Texas Women's Univ. and will be conducting a seminar there later this summer. Call us at 972-429-1922 should you wish to order. The boo

Iam currently living in Odessa, Texas. December 1996 graduate of SFA. I have to leave my teaching job here because of SFA's inadequacies as an educational institution. This past summer I had finally passed the Profesional Development test. The people at SFA said that was all I needed to start teaching again. SO then I sent off for my papers to be certified. SFA said no because I did not have enough health hours on my transcript. I was never informed of that this summer when i went round and round against Dr. Hallman. FIrst of all the qualifying exam is only to help the people at SFA conver their behinds because they screwed up in the past. It is not my fault that I am having trouble getting certified right now it is SFA which is the one with the problem. SFA wont even send the qualifying exam to Region 18, the service center closest to Odessa. Nacogdoches is 8.5 hours away from Nacogdoches. They wont send the test here because they say that they have never made any exceptions for anyone. We all know that is a bunch of junk. SFA is full of exceptions. They want me to drive all they way back to nacogdoches, just to take this test. SInce SFA told ECtor County ISD that i could not be certified, my conttract has been voided, and I have been on sub pay since November. Since SFA supposedly makes no exceptions for no one indivdual, I have to leave Odessa and my job to take this test. I lame all my problems on SFA right now. It is all their fault. I hear their is a law suit against SFA right now dealing with bar codes and all the other stuff the SFA cant get right. When I get back I will find these people and jump on the bandwagon because i have had enough of being led astray by the higher ups at SFA.

I took the NTE several years ago and passed it. Why cannot the state of Texas accept the scores of the NTE, since many other states have accepted this test? I do believe the ExCet is a money-making scheme and many of the professors at the seminars agree. If the state of Texas would accept the scores of the NTE, then there would not be a shortage of teachers in Texas. I read in the Dallas papers that there was a shortage of over 55,000 teachers in Texas, not only because of the insurance costs, but of the ExCet testing as well. Well, I am on my fourth quest to pass this test and I have found out from teaching in Texas for the past two years there are incompetent teachers who did not have to take this test and they have their certificates. I have had great evaluations from my superintendent and principals, but I guess the education board of Texas will not allow me a certificate until I pass the ExCet. It is a shame that there are too many good teachers who cannot pass this bogus test; a true money- making venture for the Texas Board of Educators. Now, for the health insurance issue, but that is another story.......

Mark Mendoza - Wednesday, June 20, 2001 02:33:34 PM
| Attention all who must take this dreaded exam and all who have scored between 60 and 69. I wrote this new manual, called Target 70 ExCET Preparatory Program in response to a great need here in El Paso. I've been preparing students for ExCET since 1986 and I've never seen anything as difficult as the current Professional Development test. I would be pleased to help if I can. New approach, hold the B.S. The manual is a set of background information discussions based on best practices in Texas. You know, the"best" answer! Actual classroom experience can actually hinder you on this test. My course targets individual competencies with the aim of targeting a 70 on this flaming hoop instead of aceing the overall examination. We raise scores the way we do on TAAS. As an elementary principal, I can tell you that in addition to teaching our curriculum, we target student scoring between 60 and 69 to receive an extra workout on low competencies. This book and course are devised the same way with the same approach. The book is available under the following information: Target 70, Mendoza Publications, 915 Argentina, El Paso, Texas 79903. My telephone number is (915) 373-8218. The cost for the book is $17.28 +$1.50 s/h unless you need priority mail which is a little more expensive. The course is offered through UT El Paso Department for Continuing Education. Contact Connie Quintana at (915) 747-5142. Also, a free service I provide: Call me or e-mail me your latest results sheet and I will analyze it for you. As you can see, in what is a rapidly developing cash cow, I am not seeking millions. I just want to help because I've lost many good teachers to this dog with fleas examination, including my own wife who will take it on June 30 using the new, proven strategies. Hope I can help. | I have been trying to pass the PD for three years. My highest score was a 68. I can not even take my field of study until I pass this test. I feel that the decisions about this test is coming from people who are looking from the outside, and never even been in a classroom, or who have never been in a public, not private, school. You have teachers who have been teaching for years, before this test, who are great teachers.Every teacher have t own way of teaching. I am not a test taker, but I do my job well. Studies have shown us that people learn in different ways. The same es for testing, people test in different ways. I will continue to take this test, hopefully one day I will pass. To end, we are running out of teachers. It is easier to put a teacher in a class who is educated, not depending on a test, in a class room, then to put a sub in who have no knowledge about the subject. |

Well I have one more chance to take this test. I too have taken it several times and have failed, and I am in danger of losing my job because of it. I should not have to out of state but I might not have any other choice. What can I do, I done books, study aids, review sessions, tutoring and the higest score I can get is a 65. My problem is that I keep missing the same type of questions(Compentecies 4,6,7) and I have even focused on just what I missed and still the same results happen. If you are in the same boat as I am keep me posted on .

I was worried that i was the only one that has been having a hard time passing the excet. i've done just about everything all of you have to pass the professional dev. part and eventually my alternative certification officers have said forget the professional dev. and take the content. The BIGGEST Disappointment was when i paid to take an excet review in austin (Excet Reviews of Texas, research blvd. in austin, texas). I thought for sure i would pass/ but I didn't. I was told at the review that I was eligible to retake a review at no charge and/or get Personal Tutoring--- - but when I tried to contact my instructor several times-- No One contacted me for tutoring. No Response at All! I was so disappointed. I emailed, called, left messages, but no one replied to help me out. I eventually ran out of time. I do not recommend this place to anyone, especially after paying over 100.00 for an afternoon and being left completely disappointed.

I was told that if I didn't pass (which i didn't) that I would be allowed to retake a review at no charge and/or get personal tutoring. I tried to get in contact with instructor by email, phone messages, called the head office --- AND STILL NO RESPONSE FROM them. I paid so much money over 100.00 for an afternoon and they made promises to me they didn't keep. My time has eventually run out - they still haven't called me. I don't recommend this training. T is however a study manual put out by Baylor University in WAco Texas. od info and offers great help! I'm still studying! Hope the best for us all. |

I am really curious on how many teachers are failing these test. AM I the only one asking these questions? At $72 dollars a pop, someone is making a lot of money off of underpaid teachers. When you do pass the test it is only od for 5 years, what then, another test? Studying for the test is not only hard but for teachers who have over 20 years experience are being asked to also move on or pass a test. Why get a college degree anymore, let's just take test to determine what we can teach. It's time to start protesting and asking for some answers. It is funny how all of these help you pass the test reviews really can't say what is on the test. But like to take your money with false hope. Oh, what a sad life we teachers must put up with. od luck to all who try but don't give up!
brewer - Tuesday, April 29, 2003 11:31:26 AM
I think the secondary history test is totally biased. A lot of the questions that come from the essays and poetry asks one to form an opinion about what he/she is reading. I'm sorry, but logic will tell you that all Asians, Chinese, or whomever will not feel the same about what situation they are put in. We have no way of knowing what those authors are feeling or saying. Each person is different and will interpret what he or she reads differently. T is not an obvious right or wrong answer. If I were failing over straight out history questions, I could accept that. I feel like I'm taking a literature excet. They say t's a teacher shortage. Well, if this keeps up, our society will be beyond shortages. I'm already checking into another career. I have friends who are also doing the same. Teachers have to meet all of these requirements and they are raising the standards. Are teachers getting any pay raises? When it comes down to it one has to ask him/herself is it really worth it? It's funny that our society wants to make sure teachers are competent. Well that's based on the effort of the other teachers that were and still are teaching now. So why is it if they weren't competent enough they don't have to be tested and put through the crap we are? Especially since it's coming from their results right?

I looked at a study guide provided by the TEA and I passed the Generic Spec Ed test. I have taken the Professional Development Test, the English (Secondary, Kinesology (all levels) and passed all of them. What I did was get a od night's rest before the test, walk in in with confidence in my abilities to reason, without panicking, and I passed all of the tests I took. The reason that I am writing this is because I know that some of you have test anxiety (and who wouldn't with the price of eache test) not to mention feeling under prepared for the test. They have several resources at TEA and also study reviews for anyone that is interested. I also challenged the Reading excet and passed it. The one thing that makes me upset is that I took special ed before it went to the 5 year plan, and I can't have it listed on my certifiacte because they claimed I had to teach a year first!

I am so upset I just took the pro. deve. and elem. comp. on June 28 (the last time it is offered) I have taken these tests four times and can not pass them. I always come very close but not close enough. I was also told by our university professors that the testing site randomly through out some of your test question (I'm sure they have thrown out all the ones that counted for me.) Anyway, at first I thought this was a fair process but now I'm beginning to wonder it the testing site selects who they want to pass according to RACE. Why do they need to know my race on the application? I feel this testing process is very unfair. Now I don't know what to do. The Excet exams are over now and I think it's unfair that I have to take additonal courses in order to take the Texes exam. Please give me some advice. I have cried all day after viewing my score and reading "DID NOT PASS" for the fourth time. In additon, I also feel the universitities should also be held accountable for the students not passing this exam because most of the information was never taught during my course work. Tfore, my collegaues that did pass it BY ONE or TWO points continually remind me that it was pure LUCK not knowledge.

Tfore, my collegaues that did pass it BY ONE or TWO points continually remind me that it was pure LUCK not knowledge. |

| I finally passed both content and professional development for sp.ed. I bought the Excet Master and used it to study. It comes with video, flash cards, and practice test. It cost about 70.00, but helped. It was od for excet and the texes test prof. dev. Check out the website to get more info. I also had questions that were responded to the next day by email from the guy who came up with study material. I almost gave up, I had spent so much money and time taking the test and couldn't pass, but finally made it. Also takes a lot of prayer. Yolanda |

Okay, I've been teaching 18 years now ( all with excellent reviews) and I tried helping my sister-in-law pass THE TEST. T were questions that I couldn't answer!!! We are ing to continue with study skills and test taking strategies, but still I worry because I know that some of you have trouble reading and writing --that or you are just not taking the time to check your comments--something ANY professional should do. Is it a combination of the two (questions and trouble comprehending)? Has anyone used the Professional Dev. book that claims to get you to pass the test the first time? If so, post a notice so that I can order it.

For all of my Texas ExCet Exam peers. I too have taken the required courses for my certiification several times. I have decided that if I do not pass the Professional Development test this time around (Oct. 4, 03)... it will be time for a career change. If I do pass it then I will challenge the Elementary Comp. for the 6 th time. The idea of failing anyone of the two tests mentioned above is my prompt to move on. But I am not moving on quietly. I have every intent of contacting Senator Lettica Van De Putte and creating a post graduate movement to rally in front of the State Capitol in protest of the Texas ExCet Exam. My al is to insist the test takers.. be given their failed tests to study the area of incorrect responses. T is NO way we can pass if we do not have a reference of what QUESTION we errored.

It is my understanding that the Excet Exam was created the State of Texas to place student failing grades on the teacher. So with this in mind, why are our children still failing to pass the State imposed TAKS, TAAS and TEKS. Its not the teacher folks, its the State failing to provide the funds teachers need to supply their classroom with the proper tools and at least one more adult to make true the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND state al. Just like in the Excet Exam idealistic VISION...THINK ONE CHILD, ONE TEACHER WITH ALL THE MONIES AND TOOLS "THE IDEAL CLASSROOM" A FANTASY CLASSROOM....HMMM NOT REALISTIC AND THEN THE TEST IS NOT REALISTIC EITHER... ASK YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVES TO CORRECT THIS DISPLACEMENT OF BLAME ON THEMSELVES FOR FAILING TO PROVIDE US THE TOOLS WE NEED TO MAKE TRUE THE NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND STATE AL.

Of course this exam proves to no one,who is a od teacher or not. But to all of you who are trying to pass this exam. Please, Please do not give up! After reading all of your responses, all of you are right in your thinking. You do have to remember that most exams or questionaires are made by people who have no ideal of what es on inside of a classroom. I have thought like many of you, the test was bias, its a money making scheme, the race card issue, (smile), everything. I have spent so much money on these exams. But,one thing I did not do was, that I did not give up. I also networked with people who were in the same boat. Now, almost all of us are certified. Get with people who have taken the exam and maybe they can remember some of the questions. Put a study guide together and from t. I did not pay anyone to help me study because I felt I had paid the state enough money for the test I had failed. Good luck to all of you who are still trying and don't forget to Pray also.

I feel that the exam is like heads or tails. I finally passed the ece-4 content part after taking the excet like a million times. I started taking the test spring 2000 and it took me 4 years to pass it so you could just imagine the money and tears I have shedded with this test. I was about to change my career, but t was always a little voice in the back of my mind saying keep trying and don't give up. People, don't give up. You can do it. You will pass the test. It took me four years and I have spent plenty of money on reviews and all sorts of books and just everything. The only thing I wish is that out of all the money I spent reviewing and taking the test, I really wish that I could get some of my money back that I spent. If anyone needs a friend to talk to about the ece-4 content area or if anyone need help email me. Also if any of you know of a way that I could get a refund back on all of the failing test that I took please let me know. scherryterry14@hotmail.com

I'm still having trouble being Certified because I took the test under the charter School so, no one can certify me yet, I passd the test. What should I do? I graduated from Baylor and never could pass the test to be certified and have now passed the test through the charter school and still can't be certified. Any answers to my questions? |

Are the questions on the actual test similar to those found in the online study manuals though the Texes/Excet website? Are the question on the online study manuals a waste of time? My wife is trying to study for the Generalist 4-8 (#111)exam for a December test. Why is it so difficult to find information for this? Also, I do not want to have to pay a lot of money for test materials from website.
