• I enjoyed the presentation by Dr. Robert Zemsky. He named
• and described several phenomenon which I have observed
• in higher education in general and at SFA in particular.
• His classification of SFA as a "medallion" is correct
• though we are obviously not close to the top of the
• "pyramid". His recommendation that we figure out who or
• what we are and do a good job of "selling" it is critical
• to our future. Our recent enrollment declines are
• indicative of the problem we are up against and
• we are somewhat late in beginning to deal with it.
• His division of a university into a "core" and a
• "perimeter" was useful. I thought Bob Szafran's question
• using "periphery" and Zemsky's emphasis of "perimeter"
• illustrated another problem we are up against.
• What are the "core" and "perimeter" of SFASU?
• Can we use the two to strengthen each other?
• I disagree with most of Dr. John Dahmus' critique of the
• presentation and feel that Dr. Dahmus missed the points
• Dr. Zemsky was trying to make. Dr. Zemsky did bury his
• good ideas late in the presentation and stated them in
• convoluted terminology.
